GUIDE TO AMIGOS IMMUNIZATIONS
The following is a suggested timeline for obtaining the immunizations for Latin America travel next summer.
November – December
Start Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Vaccine series now in order to be completed before departure. Update your Tetanus/Diphtheria, Polio, and Measles/Mumps/Rubella with boosters, if needed.
January – February
Continue with Hepatitis B series (remember, 1 month between 1st and 2nd doses).
March – April
Obtain Typhoid vaccine, and a Yellow fever vaccine if required for your Project country (see Immunizations Required for AMIGOS Participants)
May – June
Complete Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines series (6months between 1st and last doses.) Obtain PPD skin test.
June – Actual Departure Date
Start Malaria medication 2 weeks prior to potential exposure.
Return from Country
Obtain PPB skin test within 6 weeks of return home.
Special Notes
It is wise to plan ahead to receive the vaccines, checking on scheduling and availability. Vaccines will not be given to you if you are ill. Also, you do not want to receive them the day before a big event, since there might be some slight side-effects.
For Kaiser members: If you encounter any difficulties, please call the Adult Injection Clinic.
The Santa Clara County Immunization Clinic at 976 Lenzen Avenue, San Jose, 408-792-5200 has a Travel Clinic with any of the above vaccines available. They offer the standard vaccines at a low cost. Many private physicians will not have Travel Vaccines. An appointment must be made for Yellow Fever.
