Volunteer Medical Insurance Requirements

 

Short-Term Medical Insurance

·        Included in the cost of the participation fee, short-term medical travel insurance is provided.  The insurance will cover the cost of hospital stays, diagnostic tests, surgery, hospital treatment costs and/or emergency air evacuation up to $100,000.  This is a supplemental insurance policy and is NOT intended as a primary insurance plan.  The policy does not cover pre-existing medical conditions.  All volunteers are advised to carry their own health insurance to cover any costs that exceed $100,000.  This insurance only covers the volunteer while s/he is participating in the summer AMIGOS programs in Latin America.

 

Medical Expense Reimbursement Policy

·        Amigos de las Américas will incur minor medical expenses for volunteers, including most prescription or over-the-counter medications and doctor office visits up to $100 per volunteer per year.  In the unlikely event of major medical expenses including, but not limited to; hospital stays, diagnostic tests, surgery, hospital treatment costs and/or emergency air evacuation, AMIGOS will submit documentation for such expenses to the short term insurance provider for payment.  If such costs exceed the $100,000 short term insurance coverage, AMIGOS will submit documentation for expenses to the volunteer, the volunteer’s parents and/or medical insurance company for reimbursement.
